Love Locks Sculpture

A new sculpture designed to hold future Columbia County love locks is coming to Savannah Rapids Pavilion.

Earlier this year, county commissioners approved the installation of a public art project, designed by Phoenix artist Daniel Moore, near the headgates. Visitors will be able to attach love locks to the sculpture that will be located at the end of the Augusta Canal towpath.

The sculpture, which will cost $20,000, is expected to be completed by summer. The love locks currently attached to the Savannah Rapids headgates will remain in place.

Symbolizing love and commitment, the attachment of locks to a public structure and then throwing away the key is believed to have started in Europe. Local photographer Michael Johnson initiated the concept in the county nearly 10 years ago.
