An award-winning “mew”-sical that is coming to the PAC is catnip for Broadway fans.

“CATS,” the record-breaking musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, has been given new life to appeal to a new generation, and the production is coming to the Columbia County Performing Arts Center as part of its North American tour. The musical is the fourth-longest running Broadway show in history.

Garnering seven Tony Awards including Best Musical, “CATS” tells the story of one magical night when an extraordinary tribe of cats gathers for its annual ball to rejoice and decide which cat will be reborn.

The musical features the original score by Webber (“The Phantom of the Opera,” “School of Rock,” “Sunset Boulevard”) as well as the original scenic and costume design by John Napier (“Les Misérables”).

However, the production has all-new lighting and sound design, new choreography (based on the original choreography) and direction by Trevor Nunn (“Les Misérables”).

Premiering in London in 1981 and on Broadway a year later for an 18-year run, “CATS,” which was revived in 2016, has entertained audiences in more than 30 countries and 15 languages.
