For Sally Kolar, a Certified Professional Photographer of America (PPA) Master photographer and Photographic Craftsman, photography is not a solitary endeavor.
“I rarely work alone,” she says. “I believe photography works best as a team effort because it’s always better to have input. Collaboratively, we create beautiful work, and we catch many details in the camera that can detract from an image before we even create it. Our motto is ‘get it right in camera.’”
As much as she enjoys creating images, bonding with her clients is even more important.
“When I connect with a client, it’s emotional and revealing, and it shows in the camera. A lot of people can take photographs, but not everyone knows how to capture the heart of the person,” Sally says. “I love making people feel good about themselves and helping them show their real selves to the camera.”
Sally is among only 3% of photographers in the United States that are PPA-Certified, and she opened her own studio about 15 years ago. However, she has worked in the field for more than 25 years after getting encouragement from a friend in a Bible study group.
“I didn’t choose photography. God chose it for me,” she says. “Those were the days before digital, and I knew nothing about photography. I had no idea what anyone did at a photography studio.” Sally enjoys the flexibility and variety of her vocation. Sally Kolar Photography offers a range of services from commercial work, product photography and studio sessions to group photos, children and restorations. While she is open to any job, her favorite work is event photography.
When Sally isn’t behind the camera, she enjoys gardening, CrossFit and spending time with family, which includes her husband of 35 years, Wayne; their adult twins, Matthew and Brittany; an Australian shepherd, Tucker; and two cats, Simon and Garfunkel.
