A strong pillar in the community, local businesswoman and Columbia County Chamber member, Dr. Ashley Wheatley, began practicing veterinary medicine in 2005 and founded Greenbrier Veterinary Services in Evans in 2013. Dr. Wheatley explains she always wanted to make the community the center of her practice. “I always wanted to be a veterinarian and open my own practice,” she says. “It also was important to me to be a part of the community where I grew up.”
In her career, Dr. Wheatley enjoys the variety of each day. “There’s nothing routine about veterinary medicine,” she says. “You’re a doctor, a surgeon, a radiologist, a pharmacologist, and a pediatrician.” She, along with her almost all female clinic staff know that veterinary care is about much more than equipment. Caring instincts offer their furry patients—and their pet parents—a soothing presence and calming environment.
Dr. Wheatley is also dedicated to meeting the rising standards of care in veterinary medicine and takes pride in keeping the practice up-to-date on current diagnostic tools, most recently acquiring a CT scanner to continue offering the best possible care options.
This new technology provides earlier detection of conditions ranging from a tooth abscess to cancer. During training, she discovered a patient presenting with pneumonia symptoms actually had a large mass in his chest. “We couldn’t see the mass on an x-ray,” she said, “so the CT scanner made quite a difference. It gave us the answers we needed.”
As a highlight to her achievements, Dr. Wheatley continues to be an integral part in the lives of so many families in our area, allowing them to provide the best quality care to members of their family who cannot speak for themselves and building bonds that allow families to have the utmost confidence in the care of their cherished pets. When asked to describe her team and the environment they strive to promote she says, “This is a great place to work. We have great camaraderie and I want our clients to see that,” she says. “They’re a part of our family.”
